What Reza Aslan’s appearance on FoxNews reveals about the religious divide in America
When I watched the video of Reza Aslon’s appearance on FoxNews, I wasn’t surprised. It didn’t surprise me in the least to see a mainstream media outlet portray a Muslim-American as anti-Christian, especially FoxNews. It was just another example of the massive ignorance and xenophobia that is extremely prevalent in this country, but more importantly, the major reason why that ignorance and xenophobia thrive in this country.
FoxNews’s “religion correspondent” Lauren Green embodies a view that many mainstream Americans hold: Muslims hold a radical, foreign, exotic worldview that differs greatly from that of any “normal” Judeo-Christian American. This worldview is so detrimental to our unity as a country and so contrary to the very definition of what America is supposed to stand for that it makes me cringe.
Muslims and Christians have infinitely more in common with each other than they have in contrast. Both religions have grown from the same seed: Abraham. They both believe in the same god: the god of Abraham. While they differ on one important detail (which prophet they hold up as being divine), they hold many of the same values to be paramount. Their core message is identical: be good to your fellow human and you will reap an eternal reward. You would never see a mainstream media outlet propagate that belief though. There’s no benefit to FoxNews to helping educate the American public. They only see their numbers go up when ignorant, xenophobic people are afraid of Muslims and what they believe.
It’s really quite sad that the American media is able to profit to such a great extent from the American public’s ignorance. It’s far more profitable for FoxNews to play up the distorted image of the dangerous, diabolical nature of Muslims instead of calling into light the peaceful, charitable nature that is synonymous with Islam (and Christianity).
At least Reza Aslan is benefiting from all of this controversy. His book’s sales have skyrocketed due to Lauren Green’s ignorance, and FoxNews’ pitiful standards. It’s funny how some things come full circle after all.by
